West Kowloon Terminus Building

Project Overview

The West Kowloon Terminus is Hong Kong’s first and only high-speed rail station and the largest below ground terminus station in the world. It is the Hong Kong section of the Guangzhou – Shenzen – Hong Kong Express Rail Link (X R L) development that runs from West Kowloon in Hong Kong to the boundary of Hong Kong and Shenzen, China.

Upon completion in 2015, this world-class terminus will accommodate passengers for short haul services to neighbouring mainland China cities like Shenzhen and Guangzhou on six platforms and nine designated platforms for long haul services to at least 16 major destinations in mainland China.

It will also house customs and immigration facilities, departure lounges, duty free and other retail outlets.

TBH’s Role

TBH was engaged by Gammon, in joint venture with Leighton Asia (LGJV) to develop the initial programme build for the entrance building of the West Kowloon Terminus. This highly complex structure features a curved, multi-tier, steel arch frame and glazed structure supported on multi-limb mega‑columns.

This programme was produced over a relatively short five-month period by a full time, dedicated resource team who worked closely with the LGJV construction team. The programme included provisions for design, procurement and construction and a facility for producing three month and 12 month look ahead programmes.
