Port Botany Redevelopment Project

Australia

Project Overview

The Port Botany Redevelopment Project was an expansion plan to increase the container capacity of the terminal to alleviate capacity constraints and to also satisfy future growth.

The project included the automation of the terminal to increase efficiency with the completed project delivering one of the largest automated container terminals in the world with an estimated 62ha storage yard facilitated by 9 cranes along a 1.4km quay line. The project included the delivery of new infrastructure, a new control tower, access ramp, and the testing and commissioning of an auto straddle fleet.

TBH’s Role

  • Providing master scheduling and time management services to the redevelopment project that catered to a range of stockholders including Patrick Terminal management, the steering committee, operating staff and the project team comprising of; construction, electrical and commissioning personnel.
  • Delivering strategic planning and project reporting to the above stakeholders through the use of an integrated master schedule that encompassed all aspects of the project from design, construction to final commissioning and terminal opening. These services were critical in ensuring the various components of the project remained on track to the tight delivery deadlines and all stakeholders were appropriately coordinating with one another.
  • Monitoring opportunities, risks and critical milestones on a daily basis and identifying acceleration and mitigation solutions to be utilised, including the development of staging diagrams, construction and commissioning plans and dashboards.

This included the coordination and monitoring of critical cutover activities carried out over a 96 hour window during which the terminal was shut down.

TBH directly contributed to the successful completion with the Terminal “Go Live” milestone achieved in April 2015.

The team was highly successful in pulling together all aspects of the project to deliver a clear and manageable project plan allowing the numerous stakeholders to effectively complete this challenging project.
