Bass Strait Oil and Gas Platforms

Project Overview

In 1965 an Esso/BHP Billiton joint venture drilled Australia’s first offshore well and discovered Barracouta gas field in Bass Strait. Subsequent world class discoveries in later years led to significant changes to Australia’s industry and economy. 

There are now 21 offshore platforms and installations in Bass Strait, which feed a network of 600km of underwater pipelines and keep the oil and gas flowing 24 hours a day. To date, almost four billion barrels of crude oil and around seven trillion cubic feet of gas have been produced. 

Engineering firm United Group Ltd’s 50-50 joint venture with German company Kaefer holds the $550 million contract with Esso Australia. The seven-year contract is for maintenance and minor project services, including mechanical, electrical and instrumentation, scaffolding, painting, insulation, civil, procurement and planning services. 

TBH’s Role

TBH have been engaged by UGL-Kaefer to provide planning and scheduling services, which include: 

• Developing and maintaining project schedules for maintenance, fabrication and shutdown works across all offshore platforms in Bass Strait
• Developing resource loaded project schedules for platform shutdowns to identify resourcing requirements
• Monitoring costs and resource requirements for all works across offshore platforms
